Useful to the practicing artist, a great introduction to painting materials, supports etc.

A fascinating historical document about contemporary practice in early Renaissance art.
Art in the Making: Italian Painting Before 1400  David Bomford, et al.  National Gallery Authoritative guide to techniques and materials used to produce early Renaissance art.  This is an example of how conservation can contribute to our understanding an appreciation of the paintings we see on the wall and what is often missed, in my experience, in art history.

This book is a useful guide to caring for all objects in the home (including those found in my 30's semi) using common sense and a pragmatic approach. Difficult to obtain now, but worth watching out for.
